Paragliding over Lake Annecy in summer

The best time in brief

The “best” period depends on what you want: a calm first flight, strong sensations, autumn colours or even snow under your skis. But as a rule, late spring and early autumn offer the finest balance of weather, light and availability.

Can you fly all year round?

Yes. The Col de la Forclaz faces west over the lake and works whenever the weather allows, from spring to autumn. In winter, the activity moves up to La Clusaz for a ski take-off. The only real limiting factor is never the calendar — it is the weather on the day.

Season by season

Spring (March–June) — arguably the most beautiful time for a first flight: snow-capped peaks, a deep-blue lake and remarkably clear air. May and June combine pleasant weather with reasonable crowds.

Summer (July–August) — the season of long flights: the sun heats the slopes and creates thermals that let you gain altitude and stay up longer. Ideal for the Performance and Sensation flights. Book ahead, and prefer early morning or late afternoon.

Autumn (September–October) — a well-kept secret: September keeps summer’s warmth with fewer people, and October sets the forests ablaze with colour. The low light is stunning for photos.

Winter (November–February) — crisp, clear days with exceptional visibility over the snowy peaks, and the chance to take off on skis at La Clusaz.

Morning or afternoon?

The time of day matters as much as the season. Mornings are calm and smooth — perfect for a gentle first flight. Mid-to-late afternoon brings thermals, for longer and more dynamic flights. Tell your instructor what you are after and he will suggest the best slot.

Weather and conditions

Paragliding is weather-dependent: instructors only fly when the wind, sky and cloud base are right. If conditions aren’t suitable, your flight is simply rescheduled at no extra cost. Lake Annecy enjoys an excellent microclimate, so the vast majority of in-season days are flyable.
